Digital Payload Specialist (w/m/d)

The Digital Payload Specialist will hold a technical role within KLEO, based in the Berlin office, and involved primarily in managing the design and development of an advanced networking communications payload. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the company’s activities for space-based communications payload system definition, and coordinate with our manufacturers on all R&D efforts. They will actively interface between Engineering and Business Development teams and international technical partners to ensure that the system design fulfills the company’s service delivery objectives respectively.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of requirements and specifications for a Flexible Digital Payload System to manage network routing, space-to-ground RF communications, intersatellite links and other operational hosted payloads and services
  • Develop strategic partnerships with manufacturers and suppliers to facilitate the development of a Flexible Digital Payload System
  • Support the interface definition for space and ground communication systems
  • Support working groups, consisting of internal and external partners, to establish the baseline standards in signal protocols and networking approaches
  • Support the development of on-ground simulations of the entire network architecture to define and characterize the performance of the digital payload
  • Support procurement of digital payload for on-ground hardware-in-the-loop testing of networking and routing schemes within the simulation environment
  • Support payload system reviews and validate proposed solutions from preferred suppliers
  • Maintain awareness of technology trends and assist in the development of new products and services and be able to outline their architectural implementation and support trials
  • Support customer-driven systems trades analysis and execution of change management activities
  • Design and implementation of control systems, operational software, and toolkits to monitor and enhance operational efficiency
  • Provide technical consultancy services to Business Development to support sales, pre-sales, and application development
  • Mentor other engineers in general payload development and advanced antenna systems to provide added redundancy for team expertise

    Skills and Qualifications

  • Require advanced degree in a related field (i.e. Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in satellite communications systems engineering with specific knowledge in digital payload engineering and SDRs
  • Practical knowledge and experience in communications and networking standards and protocols;
  • Practical knowledge of systems engineering and manufacturing practices
  • Confidence in working directly with potential customers, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Experience developing systems documentation, requirements, test plans and procedures, and operational procedures
  • Ability to work independently and effectively, co-coordinating tasks and responsibilities
  • Strong analytical and excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communications and inter-personal skills (written and verbal)
  • Fluency in English, other languages (particularly German and Chinese) considered an asset
  • Willingness to travel overseas
    Desirable skills
  • Practical experience in the design, assembly, integration, testing, & commissioning of satellite systems
  • Business awareness and acumen
  • Solid programming/software engineering skills with good knowledge of MATLAB, Visual Basic, python and Java programming environments
